#1 · Price seen: $199.99

PetSafe Customizable GPS Dog Fence

The cheapest custom-shaped GPS boundary we cover, and the only one that needs no app: you walk the yard placing 4 to 8 posts. It stores one fence and lasts up to 24 hours per charge.

#2 · Price seen: $199.99

Dogtra GPS FENCE

Same price bracket, but you draw the fence in an app over Bluetooth and the collar then runs on its own. It accepts dogs from 15 lb, lighter than most GPS fences we cover allow.

#3 · Price seen: $429.99

Dogtra GPS FENCE FIELDGUARD

The only fee-free fence here with live tracking, up to 3 miles from your phone outdoors. Tracking ends when you're out of range.

#4 · Price seen: $449.99

PetSafe Guardian GPS Dog Fence

Up to 5 days per charge is the longest battery here, with fully custom fence shapes. It needs more than 3/4 acre and dogs over 25 lb.

#5 · Price seen: $899

SpotOn GPS Dog Fence (Omni Edition)

SpotOn's previous collar: fencing with no plan, optional tracking plans, three neck sizes, and designed for lots from about a third of an acre.

#6 · Price seen: $999

SpotOn GPS Dog Fence (Nova Edition)

SpotOn's newest hardware with its tightest stated accuracy, for wooded or larger properties. The most expensive option here at $999.

How to choose between them

Start with your property size, not the price. Every fence on this list needs a large lot by suburban standards: SpotOn designs for about a third of an acre and up, the others for 3/4 acre or more. If your yard is smaller, a GPS fence with a membership (Halo) or a wireless or in-ground fence will fit better.

Next, decide whether you want to see your dog on a map. Only the FieldGuard (in-range) and SpotOn (with an optional plan) offer tracking here. If an escape could take your dog out of your phone's range, budget for a cellular plan.

All of these use correction at the boundary. Plan the training with a qualified trainer, and never rely on any fence as the only safeguard near roads.
