How we research
Where our figures come from
We start with each product's own page on the maker's site, then authorized retailers. Every specification on a product page comes from that published information, and we check each quoted figure against it.
If a maker doesn't state something, we write “not stated” instead of estimating it.
Conflicts and changes
Makers sometimes publish two different figures for the same product, for example two battery-life numbers on different pages. We show both, say where each came from, and never pick the more flattering one silently.
Prices and subscription plans change often, so we re-check them regularly. Always confirm the current price with the seller before you buy.
What we don't do
- We don't claim to have handled, worn or put these products through trials.
- We don't publish ratings or scores we didn't calculate from a stated method.
- We don't accept payment to include or rank a product.
Our calculations
Calculations such as multi-year ownership cost and yard coverage are labelled “SnoutSmart math” and show their formula, inputs and assumptions.
Training technology
We describe tone, vibration, spray and static functions factually. We include the position of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, which recommends reward-based training, and we never present aversive devices as a first-line or universal solution. We recommend working with a qualified trainer.
