How GPS dog trackers work: cellular, satellite and radio

Every tracker works out its location the same way. The real difference is how that location reaches your phone.

The short answer

A dog tracker's GPS chip works out where your dog is; then a cellular modem, a satellite link or a radio transmitter sends that position to you. Cellular is the default for pets (works anywhere with coverage, needs a plan); radio suits hunting (long range from you, no plan); satellite fills gaps beyond towers.

Step one: every tracker finds itself by GPS

The collar listens to navigation satellites and calculates its own position. That part is free and works almost anywhere with a view of the sky; accuracy drops under dense trees, beside tall buildings and indoors.

Finding the position is only half the job. A tracker that can't send its location to you is just a recorder.

Step two: getting the location to you

How trackers send location

Tractive DOG 6 and Fi Series 3+ are cellular. Fi Ultra adds satellite coverage. Dogtra PATHFINDER2 sends position over radio to your phone, up to 9 miles, with no monthly fee.

Which link fits your dog

  • Dogs that slip out of the yard or bolt on walks: cellular, so you can find them wherever they run.
  • Hunting and backcountry dogs working away from you: radio, with long range and fast updates and no plan.
  • Rural areas with weak cell signal: look at satellite-capable models.
  • A tag on the collar for errands in town: Bluetooth works where people are, not in woods or fields.
SafetyA tracker shows where your dog is; it doesn't keep it safe. Keep ID tags and a registered microchip as well.

Questions readers ask

Do dog GPS trackers work without cell service?
Cellular trackers need coverage to send updates; radio systems like Dogtra PATHFINDER2 don't, but only work within range of you. Some satellite-capable collars reach beyond towers.
Is an AirTag a GPS tracker?
No. AirTag has no GPS; it's found when an Apple device passes nearby.
